Jellyfish injections for acne

Two inventors working for a US company called Nanocyte have applied for a patent on a drug delivery system based on the stinging cells of jellyfish.  Jelly fish posses stinging cells called cnidocysts which when triggered, shoot a hollow thread at high speed through which poison is pumped into the target.

The researchers have suggested a system based on stinging cells whose poison has been removed and which are then primed with the drug to be injected.  These cells can then be applied to the patient on a skin patch.  Drug delivery would be triggered by a combination of pressure and low voltage electric pulses.   Cells triggered in this manner will behave in the standard way, shooting out threads which penetrate the patients skin and deliver the medication painlessly.  Removal of the tubes is achived by simply removing the patch.

The researches believe that this technology offers promise for the treatment of a range of skin complaints including acne.
